FEATURE FILM AND SHORT FILM COMPETITION The competition of the 20th edition of the Bucharest International Film Festival brings to the audience films whose directors have managed to amaze the critics and judges of the best film festivals with their debuts. A cinema full of talent and originality who arrive in Romania for the first time. PANORAMA The Panorama section consists of films awarded or nominated at the most important film festivals around the world, made by well-known authors, but with great potential to appeal to the public, screened for the first time in Bucharest. ROMANIAN AUTHORS Romanian authors section is dedicated to Romanian cinema, including both classic films and movies from the Romanian New Wave movement, in order to highlight the dynamism of our cinematic culture. Even though we enjoy foreign films and famous filmmakers, it’s important to shed a light on our own talented people and great productions.

HISTORY AND CINEMA History well understood in the present reflects the future,`` stated Dan Draghicescu. Historical films serve as excellent international cultural ambassadors, as well as at the national level, sparking interest among the younger generations through screenings at film festivals. BIFF is the only international film festival in Bucharest that enjoys a dedicated historical film section.

RETROSPECTIVE The well-known Canadian director and screenwriter Philippe Lesage will be the president of this year's Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF) Jury. Originally a documentary filmmaker, Philippe Lesage entered narrative cinema in the 2010s with the films Copenhague: A Love Story , The Demons (Les Démons) and Genesis (Genèse). Genesis has won numerous awards including the Golden Wolf (New Cinema Festival, Montreal), Best Film and Best Director Awards at Seminci in Valladolid (Spain) and Best Film at Los Cabos International Film (Mexico). . The film was also selected at the renowned Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln Center's New Directors/New Films Festival, AFI FEST and the Rotterdam Film Festival. Metacritic ranked it the 16th best film of 2019. The BIFF XX anniversary edition will also feature a retrospective of award-winning films over time.
